Brantwood house lies 2
1/2 miles east of Coniston , set above the eastern shore of the lake. It
is said to possess the finest outlook of any major home in the Lake
District. It is best known by the fact that in the later 19th century
it was the home of the great philosopher, artist, and man of letters, John
Ruskin. The house is, in part, open the the public, and houses a
collection of Ruskin memorabilia. These include drwaing, watercolours,
his collection of books (including his own writing) and his
paintings. Many of the rooms are laid out as in Ruskin's day, and
include his study, with the desk at which he sat when much of his great
work was written. From his desk he had a magnificent view of Lake
Coniston, and the fells beyond.
