Elterwater
Elterwater is one of
Lakeland's more idyllic spots, lying between the surrounding fells as you
drop down from the Langdale Valley and the lake formed by the River
Brathay being dammed. The village is quite small but well worth visiting. (Parking is available, thanks to the National Trust car parks, one by the river, the other 600 yards north of the village is open common land- this park is free). The village has a somewhat bleak appearance with the granite and slate, but softened by tree-planting. It owes its name to the swans which still glide by its 'water' (the Norse name). Local artist Judy Boyes has her Studio in the village, which still boats a shop and a pub.
The lake Elterwater lies alongside a footpath, newly remade which runs the two miles to Skelwith Bridge and alongside the rapids of Skewith force. The path runs through bluebell woods and then on across meadows at the lakeside, with magnificent views of the Langdale mountains. When you reach Skelwith you can refresh yourself at the tea rooms at the Touchstone Gallery. Brittania Inn Website Skelwith Bridge Walk |
